In Dependence

Celebrating 61 years of Freedom is a moment whose joy can be matched only by a mother who has given birth to a child. When the mother, our mother, India is celebrating the moment of birth as a free country with such intensity even after 61 years, it shows the strength of the dreams seen by those who dedicated their life for this cause bravely, whole-heartedly, and for a reason worthy of every drop of blood they had spilled. Every person who felt about this country’s freedom as the sole purpose of the eventful years (s)he spent on Earth, deserves a standing ovation and an applause loud enough to reflect the heart beat of every Indian brimming with pride for being one.

Coming to think of a new nation emerging into the world without the support of any super power should have been a surprise. Even as the determination of many freedom fighters resulted into the fruit we are having today, a great challenge of driving the country, a difficult responsibility, was faced with learned patience by leaders like ‘Mahatma’ MK Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, B R Ambedkar, S Radhakrishnan, and the like, post independence. I remember hating the repeated occurrence of lessons pertaining to the life and achievements of Dr.B R Ambedkar in my schooling days. But when I thought about the effort and dedication he put into the making of our Constitution, I wondered at his achievement of the mammoth task.

But all the things we came across till now limit the freedom to political and administrative nature only. Our dependence on others continues to exist in many cases. 61 years of freedom from colonial rule should stop being just a matter of celebration and signify the overall progress of the nation in general, and that of every citizen in particular. The fight for the uplifting of weaker sections should transform into a process of uplifting itself, than continuing to be just a fight. The Spark that occurs at the dawn of new realisations among the Indians in various fields should grow into a fire, bright enough to lead the world into unexplored domains of knowledge base, instead of being doused off in the Spark stage itself. By Independence, i mean to say that we should rise in the world-arena as a country uniform and complete in all respects, and thus reduce the dependence on other countries, which unfortunately cannot be avoided altogether.

Comparing our Motherland with other nations and pointing out at the deficiencies and the incompetence pains my heart too. What other scale can we choose to measure InDependence then? All I wanted to envision amidst the pomp of the Indian Independence Day is that a day should come when India is over the league of he developed world, and if possible, I want to be a part of that celebration and triumph by being one among the people responsible for such a feat. JAI HIND!

The world is calm and peaceful apparently, but how many can actually feel the tension building up in everyone’s lives? Very few, because, each one is engrossed in their own problems, solutions, happiness, comfort etc. The wars that are waged and those worth waging are not just on the borders of the country or in the skies and waters, but within the boundaries of our own homes. It shouldn’t be shocking to come across this revelation to most people, and i am quite sure of it. Didn’t get me yet huh? Then, read on…

Few of my (she)friends at WP are a rage at writing topics that concern women and their respect, modesty, dignity and other aspects which basically have the message that women are not treated properly. It appears true from a bird’s eye point of view, but can we blame only the men for this? Another friend RJ wanted to be born as a girl if he had the chance to choose his birth again. I whole-heartedly appreciate such an idea because it appears naive and stupid to most of us. This is just an example to show that men-in-general are not responsible for what women are facing now.

The rift between boys and girls was common in childhood and i had this arguement, rather a debate, in the high school. I was waiting for my turn stupidly and when i realised that i wont be given one, i barged into the argument. If men and women were supposed to be equal, why were they not made equal? Don’t you think the creation of men and women the way they are, was a secret of nature? Secondly, both were given the same brains with some mild differences. So, if they really craved for status quo all the time, why didn’t they retort in the beginning of the civilization? Did they subdue themselves just before the muscular power of men and chose to play political and love games with them? I know that i am not talking about women in general, but about those who had led to a change in the course of history and hence, resulting in the current scenario.

I strongly attribute the inequality observed to the history, because, that is where everything comes from. And for the mistakes committed by men and women in the past, the current day “empowered women” are fighting for their rights. It is bad to note that those who fight for the rights of women living in slums etc., come from an acre wide bungalow or in a car fit for a goddess. Ask them to stay in the hut for an hour and they’ll know why women still choose to be there. It is not just equality that they crave for, but a morsel of food a day, and sometimes, for a couple of days.

And lastly, coming to the most popular type of people – students, teens, tweens (or whatever!) The inequality is present here too. But in the opposite fashion. I am amazed at the stock of weapons they carry to subdue men. A smile can speak a thousand words and a tear can possibly, never stop speaking ๐Ÿ˜€ . Its available against all kinds of men and all age groups. But, they are not carried by all. If at all the technical know-how spreads among all women, we men will have to run to Mars and keep gaping at our once beautiful home – the Earth!

PS : I sincerely feel that men will have to start fighting for their rights someday. Oh God! Please let me hide beneath your cushion if it happens! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Responsibility

The weight of this word is growing with every passing day, especially on people like me ie., falling in the same age group and doing the same work as i am – studying. You see, we are the ones who are expected to form better citizens and ensure a “lead kindly light” sort of future to the country, right? So the gravity of the matter appears greater. However, i feel that, responsibility is to be held by everyone with relatively equal importance, according to their work. A good student should be responsible for his future, a good parent for his children, a politician for his people, an actor for his fan-following, a cop (or any public servant, for that matter) for the society, a good lover for his loved one(s) and so on. There can be none without this feeling, no matter how small it is.

I was being cornered by my father every time i was into some mischief, saying that i should grow up and be responsible. It didn’t end with that. I had to go through the same lecture many times thereafter, from my mother, teachers, uncles, aunts, older cousins, and at times, in a lighter vein, from my younger brother too! Man, it was too much. In course of time, i began wondering, what is the need of responsibility when people are doing what they have to. My father earns for the family, my mother maintains it superbly, I and my bro study well enough to save ourselves the comparison with first-class-someones (All this apart from having lovable times at dinner together, and at other occasions too!). And coming to the broader picture, everyone in this world is doing some job which will keep their loved ones and well wishers, contented and happy.

But you know something, as it happens with all things, I started growing older, and coming out from the innocence of a child and his ignorance about the actual world. And, the earlier thinking was not mature enough on my part. I realized it. But the point was that i could not really understand what responsibility actually was, even after that small ‘enlightenment’. (i guess, that enlightenment hadn’t lighted up my mind fully! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) However, my quest for this piece of knowledge wasn’t going to end very soon.

The years of adolescence did make me hard by heart. Whatever little juvenile “tender heartedness” was present, had left me. It made me feel free, and i was going to care a damn about being irresponsible, simply because, i didn’t want to care. However, something else had been cooking up in my fortune. Instead of being a rambo that i wanted to be, i was about to become a romeo. I started to have feelings for a girl. This thing, sort of changed my angle of thinking. The state, in which you wanted to see the girl, changed into a feeling that urged you to be with her, then making you feel that you should ask her out, feel for her, feel like her and so on. Then, when i thought i was serious about this girl becoming my ‘Cupid’s gift’, a different feeling struck me for the first time. Though i felt it very weakly, i wanted to be responsible for this girl, who had come just like a lightening strike in my life. God!. That was a nice feeling. I was thinking about myself as a grown-up, as a man ready to take on the forebodings of life. So, this was responsibility, or was it?

Being taught by my little experience, the lesson of responsibility sinked into me, bit by bit. After all these experiments with myself and the things that happened to me, I found myself in a curious situation. The job placements had started in my college. After cracking the aptitude which was not that hard, I was sitting with an interviewer who was supposed to handle both Technical and HR. I was refreshing my memory regarding the questions that may be popped at me.The technicals were answerable. And LO! An unexpected question! “So Mr.Sriharsha, how would you define responsibility?” I was freaked out at this. I hadn’t prepared for this sudden synopsis of my experiment. I had to think for a while. Why were my father, mother, teacher etc., asking of responsibility from me? Did they want me to do something? Something other than what i had done all those times? And it boiled down to one thing. They were all expecting something from me and i wasn’t doing it. They, being very much elder to me, expected something of their level of maturity from me. And i had to do just that to be labeled Responsible. It seemed to be a logical answer. “Sir, Responsibility is living up to the expectations, people have on you.”

I take pride in saying that the interviewer was interested in considering my answer and finally he accepted it satisfactorily. Right after coming out of the room, i had a weird thought that i was preparing all my life for this moment, just to answer this question. After all, we are always preparing for many unforeseen situations and surprises offered to us by this responsible journey – Life. And in leading your life you should be exceeding your own expectations!

Being single

after seeing myself with me always for the last 19 years…., I’ve started feeling awkward of being alone. every person who was single while we were friends in the beginning is now committed. it doesn’t matter as long as they r just acquaintances, but if the r really close, u cant stop havin feelings like envy, boredom, loneliness, frustration, and all these get magnified if they are on a roaming spree…..

i cant help but wonder whether all those who fancy love in their late teens or early twenties, will be able to sustain it when the time for real responsibilities crop up. will they be able to make the choices clear between home and potential partner… can they foresee at least the near future so that their foundations of married love can transform into a fruitful life of endless love…..?

all these sound philosophy to me, myself…. but r u not living the present in such a way that it is a gift of the past to be passed on to the future…. if everyone were living for just today, i could kill or steal or do anything today and say that I’ll start a new life tomorrow…. thats just impossible…. and immoral.

and when all these things come into my mind its the clash of thought titans…!! the rigid part of my character planning out a nice future…. and my volatile self craving for that oomph factor…! and if i tell this is what is going on in my head to my friends at home(my parents) they are either too concerned abt my stability…. or they blast me for my irresponsibility and remind me of my duties with a bang on my head….!!

after all… this is life… a set of dreams in ur heart, another set of realities in ur mind, and a fierce battle between them all along….!
